Oh no. Not Writer's Digest

This letter makes me reconsider subscribing.

People find Blaine INSPIRING? Ick.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Monday night, street magician David Blaine tried to do the unthinkable: hold his breath underwater for nine minutes. During the entire week leading up to the event, Blaine was living in a man-sized snow globe of water. It’s arguable whether this stunt was more impressive/insane than some of his others--being buried alive for a week or hanging in a small box for 44 days over the Thames River in London--but he continually pushes his limits. I try to do the same. In fact, I once went a full day without cable.

What risks have you been willing to take to advance your career? Have you dedicated yourself to studying the writing craft? In this week’s newsletter, we’ve assembled our annual list of the “101 Best Websites for Writers” to get you on the right path. Maybe pushing yourself means taking a writing course. Teri Brown includes a few options in her piece, “Class Act.” And if all you have is time to read, check out our Book Buzz forum to chime in on this month’s selection, Mary Gaitskill’s Veronica.

Blaine may not have held his breath for the entire nine minutes, but you have to admire his ambition. Maybe it’s time you challenge yourself as well.

Take care of yourself and your writing,
Brian A. Klems

I'll call that "ick" and raise you a "puke". Inspiring? Creepy is more like it. And the people who find him inspiring? Really, really creepy.
